Gallery Description
Japanese art printing started in the 16th century and evolved with the introduction of the multi-color woodblock print. Wood block printing uses several wooden blocks, each one of them for a separate colour. Japanese art printing is an interesting and highly complicated technique where the work of art passes through the hands of the artist, block-copyist, block carver and the printer before the final version is ready. The earlier woodblock prints were mainly those of deities made at temples. The contemporary prints are different from the earlier styles and strongly influenced by Europe and America in style and technique. In spite of having seen various styles and commercial twists, Japanese art printing otherwise called Ukiyo-e is one of the most popular and highly appreciated arts around the world.
