Biography Nicholas de Stael was born in 1914 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He moved to Poland and travelled widely before settling down in Paris. His earlier works were figurative but later he moved on to more abstract objects. His paintings are characterised by deep bold colours with elegant variations in colour and texture.
